Memories - before I forget them all!

This is a place to write about memories of events - some important, many not so much - in my life. Some of these I may someday turn into memoires, or add photos as I come across them in my piles of pictures. I hope to document times in my life as a girl, a young single woman, a married woman and a mother. I feel like a lot of things I should remember have been forgotten. I am hoping this exercise will help me remember more times. Here goes!

PITTSBURGH

Earliest memories:
Spelling my first word (cat); sitting behind the wing chair in our house on Barth avenue and reading - my favorite books to read were Nancy Drew mysteries and Golden Book encyclopedias; rolling poker chips down an improvised ramp made up of game boards; Smokey Burgess, our gray cat (named after the Pittsburgh Pirates catcher) and the day I found out he had died (I came home for lunch and was eating a hot dog when Mom told me); keeping our Halloween candy in the front coat closet because it was always cool in there - my candy lasted months because we only ate one piece a day; sharing a bedroom with my sister Debbie. We had twin beds and sometimes I'd build a tunnel by covering the space between the beds with blankets; all the stuffed animals that I liked to sleep with (6 or 7 in each arm); playing with the neighbor kids - Red Rover, Freeze Tag, and other group games, or playing board games like Monopoly or Go for Broke with a couple friends on the front porch in the summer; Barbie dolls - I also had extra interchangeable heads and another doll named Mary Makeup, with her own .... makeup!; Chip telling me that he "was going to see a man about a horse" when he was just going out with friends - I always asked "what color?" and meant it!

Eating meals in the room Dad added onto the house which was a couple stories above the backyard; the way Debbie hiccupped; the little red chair I stood on when helping at the counter or that Smokey sat on; sledding down the backyard hill into the alley; riding my bike in the alley and wiping out because of wet leaves; riding my bike and wiping out because I had those paper sunglasses on after getting my eyes checked - maybe this happened in 5th grade - while I was riding to my friend house; riding my bike no-handed down the hilly streets in our neighborhood (I had coaster brakes!); walking through the cemetery to collect buckeyes;

Washington school:
Kindergarten with Miss Glunt, the jungle gym in the room and taking naps on our mats; first grade - I don't remember the teacher's name, but I remember her coming into our room, lowering the window shades and telling us through her tears that President Kennedy had been shot - we went home early that day; second or third grade was the year I constantly had a stomach ache - eventually I had an upper GI test to see if there was anything wrong. Deb and Chip told me that I'd drink a vanilla shake and it would taste really good, but it was chalky and tasted horrible! There was nothing wrong with my stomach, it was all in my head!; fourth grade with Miss Armstrong, who was hard of hearing - I also got glasses that year; I don't remember anything special about fifth grade; sixth grade was Mr. ??? who kept a bull whip in his filing cabinet - he was dreamy, yet I can't come up with his name! [Now I remember: Mr. Daniels!] I was also a crossing guard that year; walking home for lunch; the few times that I stayed at school for lunch and bought lunch; getting calluses on my hands from the monkeybars on the playground.

Church:
We went to the United Presbyterian Church in Mt. Lebanon, which had twin towers and lots of stone. The inside of the sanctuary was very echo-y because the floors were tile and the pews were hard. The organist sat right in the middle of the choir loft and directed the choir. Myles MacDonald was the minister there. Mom and Dad belonged to the 79er's (because you could belong to it until your combined ages went over 79); every Wednesday after school was Youth Club - I would walk there from school, through downtown Mt. Lebanon. We had choir rehearsal first, then Bible study, then dinner, and crafts afterward. Youth Club was one of my all-time favorite activities! Choir there was where I first learned I had a good singing voice.

Web 2.0 recap

Here is a cool Halloween pumpkin photo I saw on the net. I thought it was very appropriate for this last topic as it kind of "says it all!"

I also added Yotify to the list of MPPL favorites: New Web 2.0 sites. I've set it to send me updates for the next couple of weeks on my favorite political candidates. It'll be interesting to see if I can wade through the possible deluge of emails I'll get! Then again, maybe I'll get very few. I wish I had looked into this earlier in the race for the presidency. It will be a good tool to use when I have specific things I'm looking to buy, or read about, or places I'd like to travel to... you get the idea!

Thanks, L2T, for taking the time to show us all how much fun the new Web can be! I would never have set up a blog unless you made me. I don't know if I'll keep it up much, since I don't know if there is anyone out there very interested in it, but maybe I'll do it as a way to remind myself of my experiences. I've set up 2 wikis, one for family and one for a couple friends, and hope that I can get them interested in adding to them, or at least looking at them occasionally!

I now know I can post lots of photos to the web in order to organize them. It's better than leaving them all around on various computers and external hard drives. If only it was this easy for all the real photos that I have lying around in various places in my house! It's something for the future, but it's a goal!

All this knowledge will surely come in handy for a presentation I have to give in the future. Maybe I'll blog about that, too!

Happy Halloween!

Here a Pod, There a Pod...MMM Good!

Now this was a topic that I have had considerable experience with. I have been a fan of a couple NPR shows, namely "CarTalk" and "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!" Since I don't always get to listen to the shows on Saturday mornings, I have learned to download several weeks of shows and put them on my iPod for my later listening pleasure. Here is a link to CarTalk's website. It is a very funny show and I always learn something interesting about car maintenance!

"Wait, wait" is a current issues show, with a host, an announcer, and a panel of three celebrities such as journalists, humorists, authors and comedians. Questions are asked of them relating to current issues of the past week. They also invite a guest of even greater celebrity status and ask him/her questions which have nothing to do with his/her job. Hilarity ensues. I mean it! This is a seriously funny show, plus you find out if you've been paying attention to the issues yourself! If you like these shows check out NPR's Podcast page for a comprehensive list of other shows and podcasts they offer - currently at 645!

Downloading these shows is just as easy as importing music to iTunes and then putting them on your iPod. I assume Vodcasts would be just as easy. I had a bit more trouble with My Media Mall, but eventually I figured out that I had to have the reader software on my laptop BEFORE I downloaded the book. Then I could actually FIND the book on my computer and listen to it. I do wish you had the option to return them instead of having to let them sit on your computer taking up space that another downloadable book could use, but I have not gotten so many that I hit the limit. I think it's neat that you can reserve them, just like a book at a library. I was also surprised at how many books were "checked out." I didn't think that many people knew about it. I even downloaded a children's book to read on the computer, just to see how it looks. NOT BAD!

The last way to add a photo to my blog is to pull a picture directly off my computer or flashdrive. I pulled this from a flashdrive. My dad took this photo of his sister and her friends at a county fair in the 1940s, I believe. My Aunt Joyce is in the middle. Again I had more control doing it this way, since I chose the size and placement of the photo.

What's NOT to like about chocolate and cinnamon?!

Adding photos to my blog

I used blogger URL to add this image to my blog. Once Jon showed me that I have to have the JPEG url, not the flickr page url, it worked, but I wouldn't have even explored that option if I hadn't asked him for help, so a big THANKS! Jon. This way of uploading gives me more control, both size and placement in the blog post.

The photographer who took this titled it My Office Window. He pilots a boat in Houston. What a great way to see the world! He has lots of other maritime photos to see on flickr. His profile name is OneEighteen if you care to see more.

TAG! I'm it!!

Well, let me say the concept of tagging is easier to comprehend than downloading the Delicious toolbar to my computer is to do! Once I decided to forget downloading the toolbar and just import my favorites, I was on my way. I now have a bunch of tagging to do, and the hard part is NOT going to my favorites and getting sidetracked by them - they're my FAVORITE places, after all!

I'm not sure I understand the advantages of importing everything to Delicious.com yet. I am using Vista and it's easy to see all my favorites in a list when I click on the star. Yes, I do see that if I'm on another computer - not my laptop where I have my favorites stored - it's nice to go to Delicious.com and connect to them there. But the idea of seeing thousands of sites that others consider favorites staggers the mind! I already don't have enough time to play as it is! The one site that really amazes me is Go2Web20.net, which lists tons of "newfangled" sites. It'd take me a month to go to each site and just understand what each one is used for!

Not so Wiki-wiki on the wiki!

I finally got the chance to experiment with wikis. I added content to two of the favorites sites - books and pets. I found adding pictures wasn't hard at all if you have them saved on your computer. Since I'm doing this from my laptop, that was a non-issue. It was especially easy to change the picture size, too. I was expecting to have to use the Microsoft Image Resizer and change it before I uploaded it. It was great to be able to just input a size and fine-tune it as needed.

One thing I did - and had to start all over again! - when I imported my last picture, I had inadvertantly highlighted the entire page, so importing the picture wiped out all the other posts!! YIKES! I immediately canceled and started over. The danger of the wiki is how easily things can be changed. I could swear I checked out the YouTube link that Steve had put in for some very classical music and it turned out to be Anne W's link instead! People could be very mischievous if they desired!

Oh yeah, wiki means quick in Hawaiian. Onto tagging.................

My First Blog -- Ever!

Well, I've done it - gone and created a blog! Were it not for LT2, I am sure this wouldn't have happened, but I'm glad I'm doing it now. Not that there will be anyone remotely interested in what I have to say, but at least I've got someplace to say it when I want to! A great place to vent when the voices get to me!

You might be wondering why anyone would name a blog after the lowly navy bean. Well, it isn't! My husband's nickname for me for 26 1/2 years has been Beans, and my older son is a Midshipman first class (i.e. a senior) at the US Naval Academy, so NavyBeans seemed appropriate! (GO Navy!)

Now for the meaty stuff:
I went to the LibraryBytes blog and discovered that there's now a Library 2.1! Boy it's hard to keep up with all this technology! It's a very timely blog entry for me, though, as it lists 6 new websites that can make life easier for me, in the case of a program I will be presenting in 2009 on some of my favorite websites. These might just be some of them! However, in order to see if they are of any use to me, I'll have to visit and evaluate them. Sure - the homework I'm doing for work leads to more homework! Such is life!

If you're interested in checking out these sites, here's a link. As I check them out, I'll report back in new posts, in case you're too busy to check them out yourself!
